Star Wars time to shine in Disney Infinity 3, August 30, 2015

In Disney Infinity 3.0, it is time for Star Wars to shine. The Disney Infinity 3.0 Star Wars Saga Bundle includes The Twilight of the Republic Starter Pack, Rise Against The Empire Play Set, Boba Fett and as an added pre-order bonus, Toy Box Takeover Expansion Game. If you had played previous Disney Infinity, you know what to expect. For those who haven’t, Disney Infinity 3.0 gives you the opportunity to play with toy versions of Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Boba Fett. And for those who played with Kenner toys, this is a walk into memory lane, where you get to play with much better articulated versions of the heroes of the Star Wars Saga and with toy versions of their vehicles. Indeed, this is a blast from the past.

Twilight of the Republic Play Set

This play set stars the adventure going back to Geonosis. The game looks like Clone Wars and it feels every bit of a Clone Wars episode, with cameo appearances by Yoda, Obi Wan Kenobi and Plo Koon. It starts heavily combat oriented following a mission oriented game play.

There are 11 types of coins ( 1 coin each) that you want to collect to unlock eleven characters: Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Kannan, Ezra, Sabine and Zeb.

Rise Against The Empire Play Set

This play set starts the adventure with the capture of the Tantive IV by Darth Vader, just where A New Hope starts. And you get cameo appearances by Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, Darth Vader and Ben Kenobi. The character are stylized versions of these Star Wars characters, a similar to Clone Wars animation, but a bit softer on the edges. You get to Tatooine, right to Mos Eisley, and visit familiar places like the Cantina or Jabba’s Palace. You get to do a lot of exploration if you want, flying Sky hoppers or racing land speeders. I even got to put batteries on a Yawa’s transport, open it up and climb on top. I’m not sure how close this “toy” represents the one from Kenner’s (I didn’t owned one), but I was gleefully playing with it as such.

You get a lot of the usual missions, fetch me something or attack my enemy but with the Star Wars flavoring. Missions are marked yellow, blue and purple. Yellow mission are critical to move the plot line. Of course, you can eventually proceed with the story that takes you through A New Hope to Empire Strike Back and Return of the Jedi.

However, once you get to the next place, say you got to Hoth, you still have the choice to go back to Tatooine to take care of any incomplete mission or try to go for the three stars on any one completed with a low score. In other words, it is a bit open ended following the Original Trilogy storyline with variations since all our four heroes are available all the time.

There are 11 types of coins ( 1 coin each) that you want to collect to unlock eleven characters: Boba Fett, Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Obi Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Kannan, Ezra, Sabine and Zeb.

There are several types of capsules that you can open:
    – Blue Capsules – Increases spark count
    – Green Capsules – Increases healing meter
    – Orange Capsules – Increases level meter
    – Purple Capsules – Increases special meter

    Star Wars Characters

The Star Wars Figures included in the Star Wars Saga Bundle are: Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Boba Fett.

    Anakin Skywalker
The sculpt of this figure is very good. He look similar to a combination two of the last Hasbro figures from Clone Wars, with a beefier physique. He is preposed in an aggressive, almost crouching stance. His paint is mostly flawless, with some prominence to the scar over his right eye and a bit of green tone on his lightsaber which should be blue like Luke’s. He stands on a sandy/clay surface. His main attack (press Triangle button) consist of a series of lightsaber swings. His ranged attack (press R2 button) consist of a Force assisted charge and attack. His dodge (press Circle button) consist of Force assisted skipping front, back and side-side. His special ability (press R1 button when full meter) consists of using the Force to rip the ground and used as missiles against his enemies. He can also use the Force to pull objects (press Square button).

    Ahsoka Tano
The sculpt of this figure is just amazing. She looks very similar to the one from Hasbro, but preposed with an attitude, her lightsaber drawn back. Her paint is flawless, with large and expressive eyes. She stands on an sandy/clay surface. Her main attack (press Triangle button) consist of a series of double lightsaber swings. Her ranged attack (press R2 button) consist of a Force assisted charge and attack. Her dodge (press Circle button) consists of acrobatics flips front, back and side-side. She can…

My rating is for the game and this set. If I were to review based on Amazon’s price it would be 1 Star as this set it available at a discount at other online retailers and Amazon does not offer price matching.

The game itself is a huge improvement over Infinity 1.0. The figures are of the same high quality though a bit pricey if you want them all. You do not need to buy anything else if you get this set – you’ll be ready to go with Star Wars fun for months. The free downloadable games included with all sets are also a blast.
Only complaint about the game is how it performs on a PS3 – there is some lag, stuttering and just overall slow down and then speed up of the game action. This is probably due to the PS3, but surprised Disney released a game with some of these issues. Will it ruin your fun – Probably not. But it is distracting enough to take you out of the action mentally.
Younger players may need some help with the menu navigation – it isn’t that simple for first timers. Some adults may need a gamer to help them if they are new to games – but give it a try and eventually you will figure it all out and have fun.
Fans of Disney parks will love the Toy Box feature which includes many favorite rides.
